Vandet Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Vandet Sø is a clear, nutrient-poor lake with a sandy bottom and depths reaching up to 20 meters. The bathing area is flat and grassy, bordered by a fence approximately 100 meters to the right of the access stairs and extending more than 200 meters to the left. A bathing bridge is installed during summer months. The lake is surrounded by plantations and heathland, located between Klitmøller and Thisted in northern Denmark.

Water

Vandet Sø is a nutrient-poor lake with a limestone bottom and water inflow through fissures in the limestone. It receives water from Rind Bæk and Skadekær Bæk, with outflow to Klitmøller Å. The bathing area is 12–20 meters wide, shallow at the edges but reaching depths of up to 20 meters. Summer water temperatures range from 8 to 21 degrees Celsius (May to August). The bottom consists of larger stones.

Location

Vandet Sø is situated approximately 3.5 kilometers east of Klitmøller. Access is via Klitmøllervej (route 557), turning right onto a forest road to the parking area. Stairs lead down from the parking area to the bathing area.

Toilet, table and benches, waste bins, viewing platform, information board, parking area, bathing bridge (summer).

Season

Bathing water analysis is conducted throughout the bathing season. Water temperature monitoring occurs from May to August.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent, the highest classification. This classification is based on bathing water analysis data from the previous 4 years. Water is clear. Non-cloaked areas in the catchment do not pose a risk for fecal contamination based on analysis results. Nutrient leaching from agricultural areas may affect algal growth but does not directly cause water quality problems.

Risks

Periodic algal blooms may occur under conditions of warm, calm, sunny weather, typically from April to October. Blue-green algae can cause water quality problems, particularly in late summer after extended warm weather. Blue-green algae blooms were observed in July 2018 with relatively high concentrations.
