Kongshøj Camping

Kongshøj Camping is a bathing area located approximately 10 kilometres south of Nyborg in Denmark, situated in the southern part of Storebælt (the strait between Funen and Zealand). The beach extends approximately 250 metres and is characterized by mixed stone and fine sand, with large deposits of washed-up sea stones along its length. The beach has met Blue Flag criteria for several years. Water depths exceed 2 metres approximately 120 metres from shore, with firm sandy bottom conditions.

Water

Storebælt, the strait between Funen and Zealand. Water depth exceeds 2 metres after approximately 120 metres from shore. Bottom conditions are firm with fine sand. Salinity measured at 16‰ on 15 July 2010. Primary current directions are northward or southward, influenced by tidal conditions and wind.

Location

Located approximately 10 kilometres south of Nyborg. Access to the beach is available via a public area in front of Kongshøj Camping. Public grass area is located immediately behind the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent based on microbiological bathing water data from 2008–2011. Monitoring stations at Kløverhage North and Kløverhage South have shown no deterioration in water quality over the past 8 years. The Kløverhage treatment plant discharges treated wastewater 520 metres offshore at approximately 10 metres depth, achieving sufficient dilution with seawater. E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria are monitored.

Risks

Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) with no observed blooms, surface layers, or foam within the past 5 years. Low risk of phytoplankton with no significant occurrences in the past 5 years. Potential pollution sources include rainfall-dependent discharges from streams (Maemose outlet and Kongshøj stream outlet), diffuse discharges from scattered residential properties with septic tanks, and a protected natural area (marsh and lake) with wildlife that contributes fecal contamination. Bathing is advised against within 200 metres of stream outlets and rainfall-dependent discharge points.
