Tårup Strandcamping is a bathing area located approximately 8.5 km south of Nyborg in the southern part of Storebælt, the waterway between Funen and Zealand. The beach stretches about 400 metres and is characterized by a dynamic stony shore with large and medium-sized boulders both on the beach and in the water. Water depths exceed 2 metres after approximately 150 metres from the shore. The beach is backed by a 5–10 metre cliff leading to the camping area. Direct bathing from the shore is not suitable due to the large stones, though private bathing platforms are available along the shoreline.

Water

Storebælt, a strait between Funen and Zealand serving as the main shipping channel between Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. Water depth exceeds 2 metres after approximately 150 metres from shore. Bottom conditions consist of firm substrate with large boulders 10–15 metres from the water line. Water salinity measured at 16‰ on 15 July 2010. Current direction is primarily north or south due to Storebælt functioning as the main transport route for water masses between Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. Tidal and wind conditions influence current patterns.

Location

Approximately 8.5 km south of Nyborg, Denmark. Access to the beach is provided via Tårup Strandcamping.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent based on microbiological bathing water data from bathing seasons 2008–2011. Control measurements at Kløverhage N and Kløverhage S have shown no deterioration in water quality over the past 8 years. Cyanobacteria risk is low with no blooms, surface accumulations, or foam observed in the past 5 years. Phytoplankton risk is low with no significant observations in the past 5 years.

Risks

Identified pollution sources include rain-induced discharges from a point source (duration 2 minutes to several hours), continuous diffuse emissions from rural properties with septic tanks, continuous discharge from Kløverhage treatment plant, and continuous diffuse discharges from field drains and a lake with greatest impact in spring and autumn. A small lake north of Tårup Strandcamping with overflow to a forest ditch discharges directly to Storebælt; fecal contamination from the lake's waterfowl poses a potential pollution source. Maemose outlet and Kongshøj stream may be contaminated with wastewater and rainwater and transport polluted water toward Tårup Strandcamping during south or north-flowing currents. Bathing is generally discouraged within and at least 200 metres from stream outlets and rain-induced discharges. Seaweed (tang) accumulates annually on the beach.
