Lake Caldaro is the largest and lowest-altitude lake in the South Tyrolean province. It is surrounded by meadows, shrubs, reed beds, and vineyards, with numerous wooden docks. The lake's climate, size, and proximity to Bolzano make it a particularly attractive recreational centre for swimming and fishing. Consistent afternoon winds make it well-suited for sailing and windsurfing.

Water

Lake Caldaro. The water body covers 1.718 km of coastline in the monitored area. The lake is situated at 213 metres above sea level. It is part of the Adige River basin.

Location

Caldaro sulla strada del Vino, Bolzano province. The bathing area is located at the northeast section in front of Hotel Caldaro. Access to the bathing zone is very limited. Parking areas are available but caravan parking and stationing must be constantly avoided.

Facilities

Facilities are indicated locally by the competent municipal administration. Wooden docks are present. Dogs are prohibited from bathing in accordance with landscape planning regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent based on 2024 evaluation using data from 2021–2024. Limnological monitoring is active with 6 samplings per year. Wastewater from Caldaro is predominantly conveyed through mixed sewerage to a treatment plant in Termeno, located downstream of the lake. Three retention tanks are installed to contain peak flows during intense rainfall events.

Risks

Possible overflows from retention tank spillways during intense rainfall events discharge into an tributary stream approximately 3 kilometres from the lake. Short-duration pollution events from tributary stream mouths are under investigation. Caravan parking in parking areas poses a potential risk to bathing water quality through runoff from intense rainfall events. No previous cyanobacteria proliferation events have been recorded. No previous macroalgae, phytoplankton, or potentially toxic species proliferation events have been recorded.
