Lago Piccolo di Monticolo is a lake in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Italy, situated in porphyritic rock formations. The bathing area features a meadow with wooden jetties providing paid access. The lake was formed by glacial excavation and has moraine deposits in its northern section. The surrounding area is forested with mixed woodland.

Alpine lake formed by glacial excavation in porphyritic rock of Monte di Mezzo. The lake has moraine deposits in its northern section and is characterized by steep shorelines and a large deep zone. The lake has extremely limited water exchange.

Location

Located in Appiano sulla Strada del Vino, Bolzano province, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Italy. The bathing area is in front of the lido. The coastline extends 0.887 km in the bathing area. The lake is at 519 meters above sea level.

Facilities

Wooden jetties with paid access, rowing and pedal boat rental available. Facilities are indicated locally by the municipal administration. Dogs are prohibited from bathing during the bathing season under municipal ordinance.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent (2024 evaluation based on 2021–2024 data). The lake has a meso-eutrophic trophic status. Limnological monitoring is active with three sampling campaigns per year. Artificial oxygenation is employed during winter to prevent oxygen depletion caused by accumulated vegetation on the lake bottom.

Risks

The lake experiences significant oxygen consumption during winter due to accumulated vegetation on the bottom, despite the absence of direct pollution inputs. No cyanobacterial proliferation events, macroalgae blooms, or phytoplankton events have been recorded.
