Lake Caldaro is the largest and lowest-situated lake in the Province of Bolzano. It is a significant recreational center, particularly for swimming and fishing, with attractive climate conditions and proximity to the city of Bolzano. The lake is also suitable for sailing and surfing due to consistent afternoon winds. The bathing area west of the beach features meadows, shrubs, reeds, and vineyard cultivation with numerous wooden docks.

Water

Lake Caldaro. Coastal extension in the bathing area is 1.319 kilometres. Altitude is 213 metres above sea level. The lake basin belongs to the Adige River watershed.

Location

Located in Caldaro sulla strada del Vino, in the Province of Bolzano, Autonomous Province of South Tyrol, Italy. The municipality offices are at Piazza Principale 2, Caldaro. Infrastructure and services are indicated locally by the municipal administration.

Facilities

Facilities and services are indicated locally by the municipal administration. Available activities include rowboat and pedal boat rental, sailing club, surfing, and fishing. Dogs are prohibited from bathing in accordance with landscape planning regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent (2024 evaluation based on 2021-2024 data). Limnological monitoring is active with six samplings per year. Possible overflow discharges from wastewater retention tanks during intense rainfall events may occur approximately 3 kilometres from the lake via the Rio Pozzo tributary. Short-duration pollution events are under investigation, with sources identified at tributary river mouths. No cyanobacterial proliferation events have been recorded. No phytoplankton proliferation events have occurred.

Risks

Possible overflow discharges from retention tank spillways during intense rainfall events. Caravan parking and stationing in parking areas should be constantly avoided due to potential risks to bathing water quality from washoff during intense rainfall.
