Lago Grande Di Monticolo - Davanti Lido

Lago Grande di Monticolo is a lake located 20 kilometres southwest of Bolzano in a gentle depression of Monte di Mezzo, a small mountain range separating Val d'Adige from Oltradige. The lake was formed by glacial excavation. It is situated at an altitude of 492 metres and experiences intense recreational bathing use in a zone of high recreational value.

Water

Lake. The lake is part of the Adige River basin. It is mesotrophic in character, with limited water exchange. The lake encompasses approximately 3 hectares of reed beds on the north and southwest sides.

Location

The bathing area is located in the municipality of Appiano sulla Strada del Vino, in the Province of Bolzano, Autonomous Province of Bolzano Alto Adige, approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Bolzano city. The coastline extends for 1.160 kilometres in the bathing area.

Facilities

A frequented bathing establishment on the west side operating during the summer period and equipped with swimming pools. Infrastructure and services are indicated locally by the competent municipal administration.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent (2024 assessment based on 2021-2024 data). Limnological monitoring is active with three sampling events per year. No direct pollution inputs are recorded. Short-duration pollution events are considered unlikely. No cyanobacteria proliferation events have been recorded. No macroalgae, phytoplankton, or potentially toxic species proliferation has been reported.

Risks

Dogs are prohibited from bathing during the swimming season by municipal ordinance.
