Lake Caldaro is the largest lake in the Bolzano province and situated at the lowest elevation in the region. The bathing area is surrounded by extensive reeds, with very limited access points. The lake's climate, size, and proximity to Bolzano make it a particularly attractive recreational center for swimming and fishing. Afternoon winds are consistently present, making the lake suitable for sailing and windsurfing.

Lake. Caldaro is the largest lake in Bolzano province. The bathing area coastline extends 2.405 km. Elevation: 213 m above sea level. Hydrographic basin: Adige River.

Location

Caldaro sulla strada del Vino, Bolzano province, South Tyrol. The bathing area is located southwest of the lake in front of a camping site. Infrastructure and services are indicated locally by the municipal administration.

Infrastructure and services are indicated locally by the municipal administration. Dogs are prohibited from bathing in accordance with the landscape plan.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent (2024 evaluation based on 2021-2024 data). Limnological monitoring is active with 6 sampling events per year.

Risks

Possible overflow discharges from retention tanks of wastewater systems during intense rainfall events. Overflow discharge occurs in an affluent stream approximately 3 km from the lake. Caravan access and parking in parking areas must be constantly avoided due to potential risk to bathing water quality from runoff during intense rainfall events. Short-duration pollution events are under study at the mouths of affluent streams.
