Lake of Santa Maria, also called Lake of Tret, is located on the western side of Monte Mendola in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. The lake originated from an old artificial dam, evidenced by a 100-meter embankment on the southern side that was recently renewed. The surrounding area consists of meadows. The lake has an altitude of 1604 meters above sea level and a coastline extension of 0.832 kilometers.

Two possible modest pollution sources are identified: a mountain dairy located 350 meters from the lake and a refreshment point located 300 meters from the lake, neither of which is relevant to bathing water quality due to distance and scale.
