Levante Porto Levanto is a coastal bathing water in the Liguria region, located in the municipality of Levanto in the province of La Spezia. The beach features sandy bottom sediments extending offshore and is bounded to the west by the breakwater of the Levanto tourist marina and to the east by the mouth of the Ghiararo stream. The area has a strong tourism and residential character with private beach establishments, restaurants, and accommodation facilities.

Water

Coastal water body classified as mountain relief with low stability (CWA3). Area extends 0.251 km². Sandy seafloor extending seaward. Part of the Moneglia-Levanto water body.

Location

Levanto, La Spezia province, Liguria region. The beach is delimited to the west by the Levanto marina breakwater and to the east by the Ghiararo stream mouth. The Amerigo Vespucci seafront promenade and Levanto town centre are located inland.

Facilities

Private beach establishments with services, restaurants, and accommodation facilities are present. The Amerigo Vespucci seafront promenade is available.

Water Quality

Classification for 2018–2021 four-year evaluation: EXCELLENT. Monitoring has been conducted since 2019. The bathing water replaced an earlier zone (IT007011017004 Torrente Ghiararo) which was significantly reduced from 2019. The Levanto wastewater treatment plant discharge pipe is located approximately 80 metres east of the sampling station, discharging approximately 500 metres from the beach. Port-related pollution is present from the Levanto tourist marina. No cyanobacterial blooms have been recorded. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae monitoring is conducted as part of regional surveillance; no threshold exceedances (30,000 cells/litre) or intermediate values (10,000–30,000 cells/litre) were recorded 2018–2021 at the reference station.

Risks

Heavy urbanization and tourist-residential character. Wastewater treatment plant discharge pipe located within bathing waters, approximately 80 metres east of sampling station. Port-related pollution from Levanto marina. Heavy rainfall and increased stream flow rates may cause transport of effluent downstream from the Ghiararo stream mouth, which borders the eastern edge of the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae can produce effects from aerosol inhalation including temporary upper respiratory tract issues and fever in sensitive individuals.
