Torrente Ghiararo is a sandy and pebbly beach in Levanto, Liguria, Italy. The bathing water area was redefined in 2019 when the Levanto marina was excluded to establish a permanent exclusion zone. The bathing water body is classified as coastal waters with low stability. The area is situated in a residential and tourist context characterized by a series of beaches.

Water

Coastal water body with an area of 0.340 km². The water is classified as low-stability coastal water (CWA3). The bathing water is bounded by Torrente Ghiararo and Fosso di Terraro drainage basins.

Location

Located in Levanto, La Spezia province, Liguria region. The nearest administrative contact is the Municipality of Levanto at Piazza Cavour 1, 19015 Levanto SP.

Facilities

Private bathing establishments and tourist facilities are present. Animals are permitted to access the area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (period 2015–2018). Intestinal enterococci (CFU/100 ml): 90th percentile = 16.5; 95th percentile = 26.5. Escherichia coli (MPN/100 ml): 90th percentile = 19.6; 95th percentile = 22.7.

Risks

A treated urban wastewater discharge pipe is located north of the beach area, approximately 600 m from the coast and outside the bathing water boundary. During heavy precipitation, increased water flow in Torrente Ghiararo may transport effluent downstream. Microalgae proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has occurred in Liguria over the past decade. The reference monitoring station at Sestri Levante recorded values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2017. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata may cause temporary and reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals.
