Vallesanta Lato Ovest is a bathing water area located in Bonassola, La Spezia province, Liguria. The site features a rocky coastline to the west and a small pebbly beach to the east adjacent to the Levanto tourist marina. The bathing water was established and monitoring commenced in 2019. It is classified as a coastal water body with low stability in a mountainous setting.

Water

Coastal water body covering an area of 1.315 km. Rocky coastline to the west and pebbly beach to the east. Part of the Moneglia-Levanto water body within the Rio Rossola hydrographic basin.

Location

Located in Bonassola, La Spezia province, Liguria, near the Levanto tourist marina. The bathing area extends from a small promontory west of Vallesanta to the west pier of Levanto marina to the east.

Facilities

Free beach access with catering and accommodation facilities. Pedestrian pathway Levanto-Bonassola, cycling path Levanto-Bonassola, sports association brothers skate wave, and Punta Mesco diving centre are located nearby.

Water Quality

The bathing water replaced a previous designation and was substantially reduced in size. A permanent prohibition zone exists at the mouth of Rio Rossola to the east. The Levanto wastewater treatment plant discharge pipe is located approximately 350 metres east of the sampling station and discharges approximately 900 metres from the beach. Monitoring has not identified cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal species has been recorded in the region over the past decade; the reference station at Sestri Levante showed no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit between 2018 and 2021.

Risks

Pollution from urban and tourist-residential development. The Rio Rossola mouth at the eastern boundary can carry pollutants during heavy precipitation and increased water flow. Port-related pollution from Levanto tourist marina. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation causes temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
