Lido is a coastal bathing area in the Gulf of La Spezia, located in Lerici, Liguria. The beach features predominantly low, sandy coastline extending from the rotunda of the seaside promenade westward to the entrance of the tourist marina eastward. The area is heavily urbanized with a tourist-residential character, particularly during summer months, and includes private bathing establishments with various services, numerous accommodation facilities, and local dining options.

Water

Coastal water body in the Gulf of La Spezia. The bathing area covers 0.450 km². The beach is an extensive sandy beach in the northern section of Lerici Bay, bordered to the south by Lerici's tourist marina.

Location

Lerici, La Spezia Province, Liguria region. The bathing area extends between the rotunda of the seaside promenade at Lerici westward and the tourist marina entrance eastward. A seaside promenade (Don Attilio Castiglione) is located above the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2018–2021: Excellent. No coastal wastewater treatment plants or sewage pipes are present in the area. The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms.

Risks

Pollution from the Lerici tourist marina. A wastewater discharge pipe from the San Terenzo treatment plant discharges approximately 1.2 km from shore. During heavy precipitation, increased river flow from streams may transport waste downstream. Microalgal proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has been recorded in the region since approximately one decade ago; monitoring from 2018–2021 at the Baia reference station in Lerici did not exceed 30,000 cells/litre, but values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in July 2017–2018, September 2018, July–August 2019, and September 2020–2021. Inhalation of Ostreopsis ovata aerosol can cause temporary, reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals.
