Venere Azzurra is a predominantly sandy and pebbly beach located in Lerici, in the Gulf of La Spezia. The beach is bounded to the east and south by artificial structures arranged perpendicularly and parallel to the shore. The area encompasses an urbanised context with private bathing establishments, accommodation facilities, and restaurants. Upstream from the beach are a golf course, tennis courts, and a municipal swimming pool. The bathing water area covers 0.672 km².

Coastal water body in the Gulf of La Spezia, classified as coastal waters with mountain terrain and low stability. The bathing water area extends 0.672 km². Two watercourses directly affect the bathing area: Fosso dei Maccaroni and Fosso della Costa.

Location

Lerici, La Spezia Province, Liguria region, Italy. The beach extends between the villages of San Terenzo and Lerici within an inlet. The municipality of Lerici is located at Piazza Bacigalupi 9, 19032 Lerici SP.

Facilities

Private bathing establishments with related services, accommodation facilities, restaurant services. Upstream facilities include a golf course, tennis courts, and a municipal swimming pool.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for the 2020–2023 period is Excellent. No wastewater treatment plants or pipes are located within the bathing water. A sewage pipe is located approximately 830 metres west of the monitoring station and discharges offshore. Pollution sources identified include urban context, port-related pollution from the Lerici tourist marina approximately 560 metres east of the sampling station (outside the bathing water), and potential discharge from watercourses during heavy precipitation.

Risks

During upstream critical conditions and heavy precipitation, increased watercourse flow may transport waste downstream. Microalgae blooms of Ostreopsis ovata have occurred in the region; monitoring showed values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre (below the 30,000 cells/litre limit) in July and August 2019, September 2020–2021, June and July 2022, and July 2023. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
