San Giorgio Dietro Castello is a bathing area along the coast of the Gulf of La Spezia in Liguria, Italy. The coastline is predominantly high and rocky, featuring an artificial breakwater to the west and sandy and pebbly beaches situated behind the San Giorgio Castle. Both free public beach and private beach facilities with dining and accommodation services are available. The San Giorgio Castle dominates the rocky promontory, and a pedestrian gallery provides access to the beach at its base.

Coastal waters of the Gulf of La Spezia, categorized as coastal waters with mountainous terrain and low stability. The bathing area covers 1.227 km.

Location

Located in Lerici, La Spezia Province, Liguria. The bathing area extends from Punta Molo Porto di Lerici to Bocca di Magra Molo in the east, with the San Giorgio Castle as a prominent landmark.

Facilities

Both free public beach and private beach establishments with services. Private facilities include accommodation and dining services. A pedestrian gallery provides access to the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2020-2023: GOOD. Pollution sources include a sewage discharge pipe located approximately 100 meters east of the monitoring station that discharges about 550 meters offshore, and port-related pollution from the Lerici tourist marina. No wastewater treatment plants are present in the area.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events may occur due to increased stream discharge during heavy rainfall and upstream critical situations. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms have been recorded in the region, with exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit documented in July 2019 and June 2022 at the Fiascherino reference station. Exposure to Ostreopsis ovata aerosol causes temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
