Molo is an artificial rocky bathing area located on the inner side of the final section of Molo Noceti within the port of Lerici. The swimming zone is delimited by buoys and markers arranged parallel to the coast. It is a newly established bathing water as of 2022 and includes supervised bathing services with nearby accommodation and food services.

Coastal water in the Gulf of La Spezia. The bathing area extends 0.136 km².

Location

Lerici, La Spezia Province, Liguria Region, Italy. The bathing area is located within Lerici port on the inner side of Molo Noceti. The Angelo Noceti seafront promenade, the Erix sailing club at Calata Mazzini, and the tourist village of Lerici are nearby.

Water Quality

Classification pending. The water is newly established for bathing as of 2022 and awaits official classification. The area is part of the regional Ostreopsis monitoring network (Area 14). Reference station at Baia in Lerici showed no exceedances of the 30,000 cell/l limit during 2019–2023, but values between 10,000–30,000 cell/l were recorded in July–August 2019, September 2020–2021, June–July 2022, and July 2023.

Risks

A sewage pipeline located approximately 180 m south-east of the monitoring point discharges approximately 550 m offshore. Port-related pollution from the Lerici tourist marina is present. During heavy rainfall, increased stream flow from the R. Carbognano may transport effluent, though the river mouth is located outside the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms are possible; inhalation of aerosol may cause temporary and reversible respiratory irritation and fever in sensitive individuals.
