Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Maglesø is a freshwater lake bathing area located in Holbæk Municipality, Denmark. The bathing spot features a small grass area rather than a traditional beach, with a sandy bottom containing small stones and occasional larger rocks. The lake deepens rapidly from the bathing area. The surrounding landscape includes forested hills to the south and east, with lower vegetation and scattered bushes and small trees to the north and northwest.

Water

Freshwater lake with a catchment area of 1.06 km². The water deepens rapidly from the bathing area. Current direction is highly variable. The lake has a small inlet passing through a wetland area before entering the western part, and an outlet from the eastern end connecting to Truelsbæk that is dry for much of the year.

Location

Access via Maglesøvej road leading to Traktørstedet. Parking available at Traktørstedet with an information board and a path leading down to the bathing area. Food and beverages available for purchase at Traktørstedet during operating hours.

Season

Bathing season monitoring conducted with minimum four sampling events per year.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on data from 2011–2019). Monitoring is conducted during the bathing season for fecal contamination indicators (E. coli and enterococci). No exceedances have been recorded historically. Possible contamination sources could be cultivated areas in the catchment, though no wastewater is discharged into the lake.

Risks

Bathing is discouraged if water clarity is poor and feet are not visible at knee depth. Algae may accumulate and should be avoided; toxins can form in decaying algae and bacteria can survive longer in such conditions. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur.
