Vigsø

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Vigsø Strand is a bathing beach located on Vigsø Bay in the North Sea, northeast of Hanstholm. The beach is approximately 50 meters wide and more than 300 meters long, consisting of sand with large stones. The landscape is characterized by dunes, heathland, and grassland, with bunkers present along the western edge of the bathing area.

Water

Vigsø Bay in the North Sea (Vesterhavet). Salinity ranges from 30–35 psu. Depth increases rapidly from the shore, reaching approximately 2 meters at about 60 meters from the waterline. Water temperature in summer (May to August) ranges from 8–21 degrees Celsius. Currents are predominantly north-northeasterly.

Location

Northeast of Hanstholm. From Hamborgvej in Hanstholm, turn left onto Redningsvejen and follow the road approximately 1 km to the parking area at the beach. The nearest address is Redningsvejen 99, 7730 Hanstholm.

Season

Bathing season runs from May to August. Water quality monitoring is conducted throughout the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent, the highest classification available. This classification is based on water quality analysis data from the preceding four years. Bathing water analysis is continuously conducted during the bathing season.

Risks

Foam algae (skumalger) may occur periodically with westerly winds and can discolor water brown and produce foul-smelling foam. Macroalgae (seaweed) may wash ashore during storms and strong onshore winds, creating aesthetic problems and potential oxygen depletion as decomposing algae mats break down. Nutrient leaching from agricultural land in the catchment area may support algal growth.
