Omø Strand is a sandy beach approximately 170 meters long and 10 to 20 meters wide, located in a sheltered position west of a harbour facility. The beach is oriented toward the north and features dune vegetation and grassland. The seabed to approximately 2 meters depth consists of sand with significant seaweed deposits. Water quality at Omø Strand has been classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2012 to 2017.

Water

Saltwater beach. The beach is approximately 170 meters long and 10 to 20 meters wide. The seabed consists of sand with seaweed to approximately 2 meters depth. Distance to 2 meters depth ranges from 230 to 300 meters. Water depth variations are substantial due to tidal and weather conditions. The dominant current direction is from the east, accounting for 29 percent of measurements taken between 2013 and 2015.

Location

Omø Strand is situated in Slagelse Municipality, Denmark. Access is via the harbour, with pedestrian access past the camping area and marina. Parking is available at a designated car park where an information board displays water quality warnings.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent, based on data from 2012 to 2017. Monitoring is conducted four times per year. Short-term contamination risks exist, particularly during extreme rainfall, due to potential overflow from drainage systems and septic tanks in the hinterland. Most contamination is diffuse in nature from distant sources.

Risks

Risk of temporary fecal contamination during extreme rainfall events. Slagelse Municipality recommends against swimming for 3 days following extreme rain. Seaweed accumulation is common but typically disperses within days. Risk of cyanobacterial blooms is low. Algae can produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. Glass, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur. Sudden contamination may result from incidents involving recreational boats, manure tanks, or sewer lines.
