Ponte Sasso is a bathing beach in Fano, Marche region, featuring fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous sand with a gentle slope of 1–3%. The beach is protected by both natural and artificial rocky outcrops. The average distance from the water line to safe water boundaries is 80 metres. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Water

Coastal marine water body (Fano_Senigallia). Beach width: 47 metres average. Astronomical tidal range: 30–50 centimetres. Area extension: 0.16258 square kilometres.

Location

Fano, Pesaro Urbino Province, Marche region. The beach has three licensed concession areas. Parking for disabled persons is available, with an accessible path from the parking area to the beach.

Water Quality

Classification E. The Ponte Sasso wastewater treatment plant serves this coastal area, treating 1,000–1,500 cubic metres per day in winter and 3,000–4,000 cubic metres per day in summer. The plant is compliant with Directive 91/271/EC. Ten overflow discharge points discharge to this coastal section. Monitoring has recorded slight increases in microbiological parameters. A bloom of non-toxic microalgae (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred during the 2008 and 2009 bathing seasons, causing anomalous water discolouration.

Risks

One overflow discharge point (Bagni Marino) discharges directly onto the beach within a licensed concession area. Overflow discharges can occur during intense rainfall when sewer flow rates exceed threshold levels. Non-toxic microalgae blooms have been recorded.
