Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serving this bathing area is located at via E. Mattei 33, Ancona. The treated discharge flows into the Conocchio stream, which discharges directly into the sea in the area of Ancona Tourist Port.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serves approximately 90,565 inhabitants from urban areas and approximately 3,290 equivalent inhabitants from industrial activities, with design capacity of 25,000 cubic metres per day or 100,000 equivalent inhabitants. Monthly monitoring in 2010 showed Escherichia coli levels ranging from below detection limits to 3,100 CFU/100 ml, with levels conforming to authorized limits.

Risks

Combined sewer overflow discharges raw sewage onto the beach via a cement pipe. Vallimiano stream: natural clear water discharge plus combined sewer overflow discharging raw sewage directly into the sea. Phytoplankton proliferation has been recorded. In 2008, toxic algae Ostreopsis ovata bloomed in September, causing death of sessile benthic organisms (limpets, sea urchins, mussels). 2007, 2009, and 2010 were characterised by absence of algal blooms typical of the coast.
