Manzanares is a bathing beach located in Los Alcázares in the Region of Murcia, situated in the Mar Menor coastal maritime zone. The beach is 395 metres long and 15 metres wide, with coarse sand substrate and a naturally regenerated origin. It experiences high visitor numbers with daily recreational use, featuring a seafront promenade and good pedestrian and vehicular access.

Water

Mar Menor coastal maritime zone. Free bathing water. Micromareal tidal range. No currents, whirlpools, or rip currents reported. Annual precipitation in the area is 300 mm per year.

Location

Los Alcázares, Murcia region, Spain. Good pedestrian access and good vehicular access available. Disabled access is good. UTM coordinates (ETRS89, Huso 30): X: 689547; Y: 4179194.

Facilities

Three lifeguards on duty. Sanitary attention available with doctor in urban area. First aid kits, life jackets, rescue boat, and surveillance tower present. Two foot-washing stations distributed throughout the zone. One free toilet facility with water discharged to sewage system. Daily public transport, garbage collection, and beach cleaning. One bar available. Seating and tables provided. Distributed bins throughout the zone. Sporting activities include kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and sailing.

Season

Biweekly inspections are conducted during the bathing season with visual inspection parameters checked according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. Final water classification is determined at the end of each season using results from the current season and three previous seasons.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to a four-tier system: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient. Bioindicator assessments show Good ecological status for macroalgae and phytoplankton with Low risk of proliferation. Medusas classified as Good with Moderate risk of proliferation. Short-duration contamination potential factors include rainfall (Low frequency, Mild impact), urban sanitation (Low frequency, Mild impact), and coastal discharge (Low frequency, Mild impact). The seabed is covered with seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa) and macroalgae (Caulerpa prolifera). Jellyfish presence is common but no red flags for jellyfish have been reported.

Risks

Jellyfish presence is habitual; the beach may be affected by jellyfish during years when widespread proliferation occurs in Mar Menor. Filamentous algae proliferation has been observed during episodes of generalized eutrophication. Low-frequency rainfall can cause runoff from urban and agricultural sources carrying fertilizers and pesticides. Contaminated groundwater nitrates may seep when the water table is elevated.
