Ponte Sasso is a bathing beach in Fano protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The beach has fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous sand with a gentle slope of 1–3%. The distance from mean low water to high water (safe bathing limit) is 80 metres. The surrounding area is urbanised with a railway line passing nearby.

Water Quality

Water quality classification E. Wastewater treatment via Ponte Sasso treatment plant (serving 10,000–49,999 population equivalents), managed by ASET. In the last 4 years, 12 annual controls of table 1 parameters and 6 annual controls of table 3 parameters were performed, all compliant with legal limits. During heavy rainfall, 10 overflow discharge points can release untreated sewage to the marine environment from the Ponte Sasso system. Non-toxic microalgae bloom (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred in bathing seasons 2008 and 2009, causing unusual water discolouration.

Risks

Potential for sewage discharge into water during intense rainfall events. Non-toxic microalgae blooms have occurred in previous seasons.
