Ponte Sasso is a bathing beach located in Fano, Marche region, characterized by fine quartz and feldspathic sand of calcareous origin. The beach has a medium slope of 1–3% and is protected by emerged and artificial reefs. The average distance from water to the safe water limit is 80 metres, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The beach comprises three concession areas, three free areas, and one boat mooring area with launching corridor.

Water

Marine coastal water body between the Metauro and Cesano rivers. Beach width is 56 metres on average. Total area coverage is 0.59591 hectares.

Location

Via Ammiraglio, civic number 70, Fano, Pesaro Urbino Province, Marche Region. Parking for disabled persons is available with an accessible path from the parking area to the beach.

Facilities

First aid and rescue service; disabled toilet facilities; accessible path to the sea; beach sports facilities including beach volleyball and bocce; children's play area; food and beverage service. Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is E. The bathing water is served by the Ponte Sasso wastewater treatment plant, which serves 10,000–49,999 equivalent inhabitants and processes 1,000–1,500 cubic metres per day during winter and 3,000–4,000 cubic metres per day during summer. Monitoring controls conducted over the last four years all complied with legal limits. Non-toxic microalgal blooms (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred during the 2008 and 2009 bathing seasons, causing anomalous water discolouration.

Risks

During intense rainfall events, combined sewer overflows occur. The coastal section is served by 10 overflow structures at Ponte Sasso and 7 at Ponte Metauro. Non-toxic microalgal blooms have been recorded.
