Porticciolo Torrette is a bathing beach in Ancona, Marche region, with fine quartz-feldspar and limestone sand. The beach has a gentle 3% slope and is protected by emerged and artificial reefs. The water extends 80 metres from medium-low to high tide (safe water limit), with astronomical tides of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Coastal bathing water body. Beach length 580 metres, width 20 metres. Area 0.98592 (hectares). Water distance from medium-low to high tide: 80 metres.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serving this area is located at via E. Mattei, 33, Ancona.

Water Quality

Category C bathing water. The Zipa biological wastewater treatment plant (capacity 25,000 cubic metres per day) serves approximately 90,565 residents from the urban area. Monthly monitoring in 2010 by ARPA Marche showed E. coli levels conforming to authorised limits, with values ranging from below detection limit to 3,100 CFU/100ml (July 2010). Wastewater discharge occurs through the Conocchio stream into the sea near the Tourist Port. Mixed sewers may overflow during exceptional rainfall events.

Risks

Discharge from the Zipa wastewater treatment plant via the Conocchio stream. Three surface water collectors with storm overflow structures discharging directly or near the beach. Phytoplankton proliferation: Fibrocapsa japonica blooms occurred in August 2009, causing reddish-brown discolouration and oily water consistency.
