Sottopassaggio Torrette is an artificial beach with rocky barriers located in Ancona, Marche region. The beach is steep with a distance of 1 metre between average low water and high water (safe water limit). Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimetres. The beach measures 820 metres in length and 3 metres in width. The surrounding area experiences railway line traffic and urban vehicular traffic approximately 10 metres from the coastline.

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The bathing water body is part of the Senigallia–Ancona water body system.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poor). The Zipa wastewater treatment plant serves the city centre and southern adjacent areas. The plant has a capacity of 25,000 cubic metres per day or 100,000 population equivalents. Monthly monitoring in 2010 showed Escherichia coli levels ranging from below the detection limit to 3,100 CFU/100 ml, with all results conforming to authorized limits. The plant discharges into the Conocchio ditch, which flows directly to sea in the Tourist Port zone. During exceptional rainfall events, overflow discharge occurs at various points along the beach.

Risks

In 2009, a massive non-toxic algal bloom of Fibrocapsa japonica occurred throughout August, causing brownish-red colouration and oily consistency of the water. Potential for overflow discharge events during exceptional rainfall.
