Colonia CIF is a sandy beach in Falconara Marittima, Ancona province, in the Marche region. The beach features fine quartz-feldspar and limestone-silica sand with a 3% average slope. It is protected by natural and artificial rocky outcrops. The beach extends 180 m in length and 60 m in width. The surrounding area is characterized by urban development with a railway line passing through.

Water

Coastal bathing water within the Senigallia-Ancona water body. Average water depth ranges from 80 m between low and high tide (safe water limit). Astronomical tide ranges from 30–50 cm.

Location

Falconara Marittima, Ancona province, Marche region. The beach is accessible via Piazza Carducci, 4 in Falconara Marittima. The surrounding area includes urban settlements.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. The beach is served by the Vallechiara wastewater treatment plant, which has a capacity of 85,000 population equivalents and serves approximately 70,000 inhabitants from urban settlements plus approximately 3,500 population equivalents from industrial activities. Monthly monitoring by ARPAM during 2010 showed Escherichia coli levels varying from below the detection limit to 3,000 CFU/100 ml in September 2010. A natural drainage channel and an overflow structure discharge untreated wastewater directly onto the beach during heavy rainfall events exceeding the overflow threshold.

Risks

Overflow discharge of untreated wastewater onto the beach through a concrete pipe during periods when the sewer system capacity is exceeded. Phytoplankton blooms of Fibrocapsa japonica (non-toxic red-brown algae) occurred in August 2009, causing brown-reddish coloration and oily water consistency.
