A fine-grained quartz and feldspar sand beach with calcareous shelly deposits, sloping at 3% gradient. The beach extends 560 meters in length and 20 meters in width, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The shoreline distance between medium-low and high water (safe water limit) is 80 meters. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Water

Coastal beach area covering 0.79825 units. Astronomical tidal range: 30–50 centimeters. The water body is part of the Litorale tra Esino e Musone basin.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The beach is located at the mouth of Fosso Civico N.311 along the SS. Flaminia road. Access is permitted from 1 October to 30 April; guide dogs and rescue-trained dogs are permitted year-round. Health rescue service via quad vehicle on beach from 1 July to 31 August, supported by Yellow Cross of Falconara.

Water Quality

2015: Excellent classification; E. coli 95th percentile 153.9 CFU/100ml; Intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 80.6 CFU/100ml. 2016: Excellent classification; E. coli 95th percentile 225.2 CFU/100ml; Intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 82.3 CFU/100ml. 2017: Good classification; E. coli 95th percentile 323.3 CFU/100ml; Intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 62.1 CFU/100ml. 2018: Good classification; E. coli 95th percentile 365.5 CFU/100ml; Intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 74.3 CFU/100ml. Wastewater treatment is provided by the Zipa treatment plant (capacity 25,000 m³/day or 100,000 population equivalents), serving approximately 90,565 inhabitants. During heavy rainfall, overflow discharges occur from storm sewers located along the beach.

Risks

Blooms of the non-toxic microalga Fibrocapsa japonica in July and August. Presence of non-stinging pelagic jellyfish Cotylorhiza tubercolata and stinging jellyfish Charybdea. Short-duration pollution events from sewer overflow during exceptional rainfall.
