A sandy beach at Ultimo Sottopassaggio Palombina Nuova in Ancona with fine quartz and feldspathic sand mixed with limestone and gravel, sloping at an average of 3%. The beach extends 340 metres in length and 40 metres in width. The beach and its submerged portions are protected by artificial reefs. The surrounding area is urbanised with railway infrastructure passing nearby.

Water

Adriatic Sea coastal waters. Average distance between water at mid-low tide and high tide (safe water limit) is 80 metres. Astronomical tide range is 30–50 centimetres. The water body is classified as Senigallia-Ancona.

Location

Ancona, Marche region, Italy. The beach is located along the coast between the Esino and Musone rivers. A pedestrian overpass connects the town centre to the beach at Collemarino. Parking and beach facilities are available.

Facilities

Bars, restaurants, and beach establishments with disabled access. Animal care services available. Pedalo rental and windsurfing instruction courses offered in designated areas.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Category C (poor). Escherichia coli monitoring conducted monthly during 2010 showed variable results ranging from below detection limits to 3000 CFU/100 ml in September. Treatment plant monitoring showed results always compliant with authorised limits. Identified pollution sources include a natural water drain plus overflow discharge of untreated sewage delivered to the beach via a concrete pipe.

Risks

Overflow discharge of untreated sewage reaches the beach during heavy rainfall events. Phytoplankton proliferation, notably Fibrocapsa japonica in 2009, causing reddish-brown discolouration and oily water consistency.
