Rågeleje Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Rågeleje Strand is a town beach in Rågeleje approximately 300 metres long and 15 metres wide. The beach is composed of mixed stone and sand. Water quality is assessed based on samples collected over the previous four years. The beach holds the Blue Flag environmental certification. Bathing primarily occurs near the lifeguard house at Molevej.

Water

Mixed stone and sand beach with sand bottom from approximately 0.5 metres depth. Water depth reaches 2 metres between 70 and 150 metres from shore. Saltwater with approximately 2% salinity. Dominant current direction is easterly. Western and northern wind directions can produce large waves.

Rågeleje, near Molevej. Large parking area available across from Molevej.

Facilities

Toilets, handicap toilet, lifeguards during bathing season, lifeguards during school summer holiday from 10:00–18:00, rescue ring available throughout bathing season, garbage bins, sorted waste facilities, large parking area, information point. No bathing pier. No wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Bathing season water samples are collected and published. Lifeguard coverage during bathing season and school summer holidays from 10:00–18:00.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on samples collected during the bathing season. Results are published on the beach and at www.gribskov.dk/badevand. Low risk of cyanobacterial growth in the area, though cyanobacteria may drift from Øresund. Only minor seaweed growth within 4 metres elevation. Discharge from Højbro å is a potential pollution source; during heavy rain there is risk of sewage overflow causing short-term water contamination lasting up to 2 days. Bathing near discharge outlets is not recommended.

Remnants of old coastal protection structures (pile groins) in front of Rågeleje Strandvej. Low risk of cyanobacterial growth but cyanobacteria may drift from Øresund. Risk of sewage overflow during heavy rain from Højbro å discharge causing contamination lasting up to 2 days.
