Rio del Poggio is a coarse-grained sandy beach bounded by artificial cliffs in Bogliasco, Liguria. The bathing water is located in a small inlet characterized by pebbly beaches and rocky coastline, situated close to the urban settlement. The area is a coastal-tourist residential zone with private beach establishments, free beach areas, and food service facilities. The bathing water achieved a Good classification for the four-year period 2019–2022.

Water

Coastal water body. The bathing area extends 0.586 km². It is positioned at the mouth of Rio Poggio torrent within a small inlet with pebbly and rocky coastline. The water body is part of the Genova–Camogli water body and classified as coastal waters with low stability (CWA3).

Location

Located in Bogliasco, province of Genova, Liguria region. The beach is accessible via the municipal territory of Bogliasco. The SS1 state road and Bogliasco Nautical Club are situated inland (upstream) from the beach.

Facilities

Private beach establishments with associated services, free beach areas, food and beverage facilities, and Bogliasco Nautical Club offering fishing, sailing, and canoe activities.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2019–2022: Good. The bathing water is located in an urbanized, tourist-residential context. A wastewater pumping station approximately 75 meters west of the monitoring point discharges via a sewer pipe approximately 700 meters offshore. Microalgal proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has been documented in the region over the past decade. A reference monitoring station at Bagnara (Genova) exceeded the limit of 30,000 cells/liter in July 2019 and recorded values between 10,000–30,000 cells/liter in June and August 2018 and July 2022.

Risks

Wastewater discharge from the sewer pipe. During periods of high water flow caused by heavy precipitation, the Rio Poggio torrent may transport wastewater downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract irritation and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
