Scalo Corniglia is a small free beach located in Vernazzo, in the Cinque Terre area of Liguria. The beach features high rocky coastline with a small cove and pebbly shore. It is situated within the Cinque Terre National Park and Marine Protected Area, characterized by tall cliffs interspersed with pebbly beaches. Local accommodation and food services are available in the area.

Water

Coastal water body in the Ligurian Sea within the Cinque Terre area. Area extent: 1.299 km. The water body is characterized as high rocky coastline with low stability.

Location

Vernazzo, La Spezia province, Liguria. The Lardarina staircase with panoramic terrace provides access eastward, leading to the Azzurro Trail toward Monterosso and Riomaggiore. The Vernazzo railway station, public parking, and provincial road 51 are accessible from the beach area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for the 2019–2022 four-year period: Sufficient. Intensified monitoring frequency applies for the 2023 season. A coastal treatment plant (La Marina) is located approximately 150 metres east of the monitoring station, with a sewage pipe discharging southwestward approximately 200 metres from the shore. The Ligurian Sea is not characterized by cyanobacterial blooms due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions. Ostreopsis ovata monitoring is conducted under the regional network for Area 12 (Cinque Terre). The reference station at Monterosso recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit or values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre from 2018 to 2022.

Risks

Sewage pipe from La Marina treatment plant transits initially within the bathing water and discharges externally. During heavy precipitation, increased stream flow may transport pollutants downstream. The Fosso della Groppa stream mouth is located on the western side within the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata, a benthic microalga, has been present in Liguria for approximately two decades; effects from inhalation are temporary and reversible, causing respiratory tract problems and fever-like symptoms in sensitive individuals.
