Sennels

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Sennels Strand is a bathing area located on the Limfjorden near Sennels By, approximately 4 km northeast of Thisted. The beach is approximately 11 meters wide and 5 km long, with a stony composition interspersed with sand. The water is clear and shallow at the edge. The beach is sheltered by a dune ridge and bordered by a larger continuous beach meadow protected under nature conservation law.

Water

Limfjorden. Salinity ranges from 18–30 psu. Water temperature in summer is between 12 and 21 degrees Celsius. Depth: approximately 80 m from the water's edge to 2 m depth near the bathing bridge and south of it; water deepens more rapidly north of the bridge. Beach width approximately 11 meters; beach length approximately 5 km.

Location

Near Sennels By, approximately 4 km northeast of Thisted. Access via Highway 11 (Aalborgvej), turning onto Leopardvej for approximately 1.2 km, then Sennelsvej for approximately 3.5 km to Sennels By, followed by Mallevej for approximately 160 m and Thorhaugevej for approximately 230 m. Parking available with vehicle access to the water.

Bathing bridge, tables and benches, jollying platform, bonfire site, ball field, waste bins.

Season

Bathing water analyses conducted throughout the bathing season. Algal monitoring conducted May to October.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent, the best bathing water quality classification. Classification based on data from the last 4 years of bathing water analyses. No observed risk from faecal contamination, treatment plant overflows, or uncloaked areas. Nutrient and pesticide leaching from agricultural areas in the catchment is not assessed to cause direct problems for water quality, though nutrients may affect algal growth.

Risks

Risk of seaweed wash-up during rough weather and onshore winds, which can cause aesthetic problems and odour issues. Algal blooms possible under favourable conditions (warm, calm, sunny weather typically April to October), but no blooms have been observed in the area. Blue-green algae possible in late summer under extended warm and sunny conditions, but no blooms observed in the area.
