Søbugten is a bathing beach located on northern Mors in Denmark, approximately 2 km from Feggesundvej. The beach is approximately 300 metres long and 15 metres wide on average, consisting primarily of small stones with only a few sandy areas. The seabed consists primarily of sand and larger stones, with water depth increasing gradually; approximately 100 metres from the shore is required to reach 2 metres depth.

Water

Coastal water in Limfjorden classified as saltwater. The beach is approximately 300 metres long and 15 metres wide on average. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, requiring approximately 100 metres to reach 2 metres depth. Dominant current directions are from west and southwest.

Location

Northern Mors, Denmark. Access is via Feggesundvej, turning onto Hanstholmvej and then Sø Bugten. Good parking is available at several locations near the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Good. Classification is based on routine monitoring samples analysed for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) collected regularly during the bathing season 2013–2016. The classification is reviewed annually before the start of the bathing season. Enterococci and E. coli concentrations are monitored according to thresholds set by Danish regulations.

Risks

The stream Hanstholm Grøft discharges immediately north of the beach approximately 50 metres from the sampling point and carries risk of faecal bacteria from wastewater discharge from individual properties and farms in its catchment; bathing is not recommended in or near this discharge outlet. Frostkær Å discharges approximately 900 metres south of the beach; previously significantly impacted by discharge from Flade treatment plant until its closure in 2010, now considered lower risk. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms is assessed as low but can occur during prolonged warm periods with nutrient-rich water. Algae can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Risk of large accumulations of seaweed (macroalgae) is assessed as low. Glass fragments, litter and chemical pollution including oil spills can occur.
