Sjælsø strand ved Eskemose Skov is a freshwater bathing beach located on the southern shore of Sjælsø lake, featuring a 15-metre sandy beach with a 7-metre width and a bathing bridge extending approximately 30 metres into the water. The sand bottom extends about 20 metres into the lake, with water depth gradually increasing to approximately 1.6 metres at the end of the bathing bridge. Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2020–2023.

Water

Freshwater lake. Beach length 15 metres, beach width 7 metres, sand bottom extending 20 metres into the lake, water depth gradually increasing to approximately 1.6 metres at the bathing bridge. No strong underwater currents are expected.

Location

The beach is located at Sjælsø near Eskemose Skov, approximately 500 metres from the car park at Jægerhytten, accessed via Bakkevej in Birkerød. Parking is available at Jægerhytten.

Bathing bridge, tables, benches, grill, waste bins.

Season

Official monitoring season: 1 June to 1 September. At least 6 water samples are taken during this period annually.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent, based on data from 2020–2023. Two sewage overflow points are located nearby: one at Sjælsø treatment plant discharging to Eskemoserenden approximately 400 metres west of the beach, and another at Kaj Munks Vej approximately 600 metres east of the beach. Heavy rainfall can cause contamination from these overflows, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) have occurred with significant growth from mid-July onwards in recent years. No reported cases of swimmer's itch (cercarial dermatitis) have been documented among bathers.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that can produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Algae growth typically occurs from mid-July through the end of the bathing season. Algae concentration varies along shorelines depending on wind direction. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur.
