Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Skærbyvej is a bathing beach located on the Kattegat coast north of Nykøbing Sjælland in Denmark. The beach features sand with some stones and extends approximately 350 meters in length with a sand area about 30 meters wide. The water is brackish, a mixture of salt and fresh water. The beach is situated in a nature-protected area surrounded by summer houses and forest.

Water

Brackish water (mixture of salt and fresh water) in the Kattegat. At the sampling point, the water reaches 0.5 meters depth at 25 meters from shore, 1 meter depth at 34 meters from shore, and 2 meters depth at 225 meters from shore. Current direction is variable, most frequently from the west.

Location

North of Nykøbing Sjælland, accessed via Skærbyvej road. A parking area is located further out along the access road. Facilities at the campground entrance include a telephone, toilet, disabled toilet, and waste bin. Additional facilities at the parking area include information boards and a telephone.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality based on data from 2016–2019. Two bathing advisories were issued in 2018 due to fecal pollution exceedances, which resolved within 3 days. The discharge outlets nearest to the bathing site are located 1 km to the west and 160 meters to the east. The source of pollution during 2018 exceedances remains unknown.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria and algal growth is low. Bathing is advised against if water clarity is poor and feet cannot be seen at knee depth. Children should not play or bathe near washed-up algae due to potential toxins. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur.
