Topvej, Vesterlyng

Topvej Vesterlyng is a bathing site located on a stony beach facing the Kattegat strait, north of Nykøbing Sjælland in Denmark. The beach is approximately 400 metres long with a stony area about 20 metres wide. The water is brackish, a mixture of salt and fresh water. The bathing site is situated in a nature-protected area with summer houses.

Water

Brackish water (salt and fresh water mixture) in the Kattegat strait. Approximately 10 metres to reach 0.5 metres depth and 150 metres to reach 2 metres depth at the sampling point. Current direction typically from the west.

Location

Accessed by driving along Topvej to the end where a red barrier marks the entrance. The site is located north of Nykøbing Sjælland. No parking facilities are available.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality based on data from 2016–2019. The site has generally very low fecal bacterial content over a long period, with only one recorded exceedance in the past 8 years. Two major discharge outlets to the west (Højby and Paje outlets) receive wastewater from scattered buildings, combined sewer overflows, and surface water from a fur animal feed factory via a bog.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria, phytoplankton, and macroalgae growth is low. Bathing is discouraged if water clarity is poor and feet cannot be seen at knee depth. Glass fragments, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur. Children should avoid playing or bathing near algae washed up on the beach.
