Skagen Sønderstrand is a sandy beach with a sandy bottom located in Skagen. The bathing water profile extends approximately 600 metres along the coast, with widths varying from 30 to 50 metres. Water depth increases gradually from approximately 0.5 metres at 5 metres from shore, to 1 metre at 10 metres from shore, and 1.5 metres at 30 metres from shore. The water is salt and clear, with water visibility exceeding 1 metre. There are very few or no algae present, and no cyanobacteria.

Water

Salt water bathing area with sandy bottom. The bathing profile extends approximately 600 metres. Width varies from 30 to 50 metres. Water depth is approximately 0.5 metres at 5 metres from shore, approximately 1 metre at 10 metres from shore, and approximately 1.5 metres at 30 metres from shore. Water currents are from varying directions but predominantly towards the east. Water clarity exceeds 1 metre.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Water is monitored for the faecal indicator bacteria E. coli and Enterococci during the bathing season. Skagen treatment plant has an outfall approximately 700 metres south of the bathing beach; the loading from the treatment plant is considered to have no influence on bathing water quality due to substantial dilution. An overflow structure lies directly north of the bathing beach; during heavy rainfall, wastewater mixed with rainwater flows through Fyrgrøften and discharges over the beach immediately north of the bathing profile.

Risks

Bathing is not recommended during heavy rainfall when there is concurrent southward water flow, due to overflow discharge from the structure north of the beach.
