Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Skarrev is a sandy beach approximately 500 meters long located on the southern side of Løjt Land extending into Aabenraa Fjord. The beach features varying widths of 8 to 10 meters with sand and gravel in the water's edge. A sloped bank at the rear of the beach leads to a mowed grass area. The seabed consists of sand with small stones in the water's edge. The beach is situated near Skarrev Camping and includes a large summer house area to the northeast and agricultural land with scattered farms in the northwestern hinterland.

Water

A coastal beach area in Aabenraa Fjord. The beach extends approximately 500 meters in length with widths varying from 8 to 10 meters. Water depth is highly variable, with at least 100 meters of distance needed to reach 5 meters depth. The eastern and western sides of the peninsula are very shallow.

Location

Skarrev is located on the southern side of Løjt Land in Aabenraa Fjord, Denmark. Parking and a kiosk are available at the adjacent campsite. Toilets and telephone facilities are located at the campsite kiosk. Multiple picnic tables, benches, and waste bins are situated throughout the area.

Information board with warning signs, rescue post, first aid post, parking, kiosk, toilets, telephone, picnic tables, benches, waste bins. The beach holds Blue Flag status and meets the requirements for this designation.

Season

1 June to 15 September. Ten control water samples are collected during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. This classification is based on control samples regularly collected between 2019 and 2022. Samples taken at the monitoring station consistently demonstrate excellent quality. The classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, typically occurring after heavy rainfall followed by warm periods. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) may accumulate at the water's edge. Occasional pollution from accidental spills from pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewage pipes is possible. Occasional contamination from glass, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Temporary pollution is possible during strong winds and heavy rain, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days.
