Strandgade is a bathing beach approximately 500 meters long located on the south side of Aabenraa Fjord near the village of Strandgade. The beach features sand and gravel with seaweed and dry grass, with a sandy bottom after approximately 2 meters from the water's edge. Water depth remains below 2.5 meters up to 170 meters from the shore. The beach has been classified as excellent quality based on regular monitoring from 2019 to 2022.

Water

Coastal bathing water in Aabenraa Fjord. Beach length approximately 500 meters with varying width of 2–4 meters. Water depth under 2.5 meters up to 170 meters from shore. Sandy bottom with small stones in shallow water.

Location

The beach is located at the exit of Strandgade road near Varnæsvej on the south side of Aabenraa Fjord. A small parking area is available directly opposite the beach, where an information board is posted. The nearest village, Strandgade, is located directly south with approximately 15 households.

Season

Official bathing season runs from 1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent. Classification based on monitoring samples from 2019–2022. Fecal bacteria concentrations are very low. Annual classification review conducted before each bathing season.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms may occur, typically following heavy rainfall and warm periods, with signs including discolored water, foam, and dead animals. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) can accumulate at the shoreline, which may harbor toxins and pathogenic bacteria. Temporary pollution possible during heavy rain and wind from nearby septic systems in the unconnected households. Occasional contamination from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewage lines. Glass fragments, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occur.
