Skødshoved Strand

Skødshoved Strand is a sandy beach located in Aarhus Bay, stretching approximately 200 to 250 meters south from the harbor. The beach is predominantly sandy, 20 to 25 meters wide, with seaweed deposits along the waterline. The seabed consists of sand with minor amounts of gravel and stone, deepening relatively quickly to 2 meters depth at 25 to 30 meters from shore. The beach is situated south of the harbor facing a flat meadow with a summer house area in the hinterland.

Water

Saltwater beach in Aarhus Bay. Salinity approximately 25 ‰. Water temperature varies between 15 °C and 23 °C during the bathing season. Distance to 2-meter water depth is 25 to 30 meters from shore.

Location

Skødshoved Strand is accessed via Vestre Strandvej leading to Skødshoved Harbor. Approximately 80 parking spaces are available. GPS coordinates: 585424, 6227096.

Facilities

Parking (80 spaces), picnic tables on harbor area, shelter, primitive camping site, public toilets, bathing facilities, Skødshoved Pakhus with permanent exhibition and nature education equipment.

Season

Official monitoring period: May 1 to September 15. Dogs must be leashed from April 1 to September 30.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'Excellent'. Regular monitoring occurs during the bathing season from May 1 to September 15, with 10 samples analyzed. Bacterial levels are generally low but have shown slight elevation in some years. Fecal contamination risk exists from private septic systems and boat toilet tank discharge, particularly during rainfall. The area is currently being connected to sewerage systems.

Risks

Fecal pollution from septic systems and boat waste. Possible algal blooms including blue-green algae, red algae (Ceratium species), and other microscopic algae. Seaweed accumulation. Potential chemical pollution from maritime accidents or oil spills. Pollen accumulation in spring and early summer.
