Vildsund Strand is a child-friendly sandy beach approximately 10 metres wide and 1 kilometre long located on the Limfjorden, about 9 kilometres south of Thisted near Vildsund town and Vildsund Bridge. The beach is bordered by a meadow with a wooded slope behind it. The water is clear and shallow at the edge, with occasional small stones on the sand.

Water

The beach is situated on the Limfjorden. The water has salinity levels of 18–30 psu. Water depth increases gradually; from the bathing pier and north of it, one can walk approximately 70 metres from the water's edge before reaching 2 metres depth. Water depth increases more rapidly south of the bathing pier. Summer water temperatures range from 12–20 degrees Celsius. Local currents and currents in the Limfjorden vary depending on wind conditions and tides.

Location

Vildsund Strand is located near Vildsund town, south of Thisted. Access is via Oddesundvej (Route 11) turning onto Vildsundvej, following it approximately 2 kilometres to Vildsund town, then turning onto Åsvej towards Thisted for about 200 metres and finally turning down Ved Stranden near Vildsund Kro. Approximately 50 metres of walking distance from the car park to the water's edge.

Water Quality

Vildsund Strand is classified as 'excellent quality', the highest bathing water quality classification. This classification is based on data from four years of bathing water analyses. Local currents vary with wind conditions and tides.

Risks

Overflow events from combined sewer systems pose a risk of temporary faecal contamination during heavy rainfall events. Nutrient leaching from agricultural land in the catchment may affect algal growth. Risk of seaweed wash-up on the beach during severe weather and onshore winds, which can cause aesthetic problems. No observed risk of harmful algal blooms or cyanobacteria blooms in the area despite the potential for these to occur.
