Snøde Hesselbjerg

Snøde Hesselbjerg is a beach located 2 km southeast of Snøde on the east coast of Langeland, Denmark. The beach is 250 meters long and 10 meters wide, consisting primarily of sand with scattered small stones. It faces Langelandsbælt strait with views toward Karskov. The beach is bordered on the west by a stone dike.

Water

Langelandsbælt is classified as brackish water. The seabed consists of fine sand with scattered small stones; water depth increases gradually offshore, remaining under 2 meters for approximately 100 meters from the shore. Current direction is predominantly from the north.

Location

Snøde Hesselbjerg is situated 2 km southeast of Snøde by on Langeland's east coast, on the shores of Langelandsbælt. An open green area with the watercourse Bjerregårdsrenden lies immediately south of the beach.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as Excellent quality based on routine samples from 2007-2010 analysed for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria. The classification meets the required standards and is reviewed annually before the bathing season.

Risks

The watercourse Bjerregårdsrenden south of the beach carries risk of high fecal bacterial concentrations and is unsuitable for bathing. A wastewater pumping station 1,500 meters upstream has an overflow capability to Bjerregårdsrenden with a rainwater basin to reduce overflow frequency. Two stormwater pipes discharge into Bjerregårdsrenden with low impact on beach water quality. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up in the shallow water zone. Risk of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms is low. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
