Søndbjerg Strand (Nord) is a 300-meter-long beach on the eastern shore of Limfjorden, nearly completely covered with small to medium-sized stones with occasional patches of fine sand. The beach is 10–15 meters wide and situated adjacent to a scenic natural area featuring forest, wetland, and a 15-meter-high hill called Dødbjerg. The water is classified as salt water with variable current directions primarily from the south.

Water

Limfjorden (salt water). Water depth increases gradually from the shore, reaching less than 2 meters at 120 meters from the coast. Current direction is variable, primarily from the south. Current measurements from 2008–2010 show southerly currents dominating.

Location

Søndbjerg Strand (Nord) is located in Struer Kommune, Denmark, east of a large summer house area called Søndbjerg Strand. Parking is available. The responsible authority is Struer Kommune, Østergade 11–15, 7600 Struer.

Season

Bathing season monitoring occurs year-round with routine control sampling. Annual classification revision occurs in May before the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring of indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) conducted throughout the bathing season from 2011–2014. The beach meets required water quality standards. Classification is revised annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

A stream discharges immediately north of the beach and another stream (Serup Å) discharges 300 meters to the south; both carry risk of elevated fecal bacteria concentrations in their outflow areas. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed). Sudden pollution can occur from boat incidents, manure tanks, or sewer line failures. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
