Søskær Strand is a mixed stone and sand beach located on the open coast facing Storebælt in Slagelse Municipality, Denmark. The beach is oriented southward and measures between 10 and 20 meters wide and approximately 350 meters long, divided by several groynes. The beach is backed by vegetation and moss. Water quality has been classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2012 to 2017.

Water

The seabed to approximately 2 meters depth consists of sand and stone. The water depth at the beach is relatively steep, with 70 to 100 meters needed to reach 2 meters depth. Depth conditions are variable due to tidal movements, currents, and weather. The dominant current direction is from the west at 39% of measurements.

Location

Søskær Strand is located in Slagelse Municipality, Denmark. The beach can be reached via the road Skovåsen with parking available at the end of the road nearest the beach. From the parking area, a path called Lagnuestien leads down to the beach.

Facilities

Parking available at the end of Skovåsen road. Toilets available. Warning signs are posted if water quality deteriorates.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Classification is based on monitoring data from 2012 to 2017. Sources of faecal pollution include overflow from a combined sewer system to Søskær Mose and potential diffuse pollution from watercourses through Korsør forest. Korsør treatment plant discharges treated wastewater to Storebælt through a pipe outlet 500 meters from the coast, approximately 1.5 km further south.

Risks

Risk of faecal pollution from combined sewer overflow and watercourses. Risk of algal blooms is rated as low but can occur, particularly during prolonged warm periods. Seaweed (tang) regularly washes ashore but is typically washed back out within days. Toxic planktonic blooms have not been detected in open areas. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur. After extreme rainfall, bathing is not recommended for 3 days. Sudden pollution can occur from boating accidents, slurry tankers, and sewage pipes.
