Spiaggia Alle Barche

Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Spiaggia alle Barche is a stony beach located at the southern end of Lake Caldonazzo in Trentino Alto Adige. The beach has barely noticeable slope that extends consistently between the emerged and submerged zones. It stretches 800 metres in length with widths varying from 10 to 20 metres. Summer recreational activities include swimming, boat moorage, and fishing.

Water

Lake Caldonazzo. The water body covers approximately 1.0 square kilometres at the sampling point.

Location

Calceranica al Lago, Trento province, Trentino Alto Adige region. The beach is situated at the southern extremity of Lake Caldonazzo at 449 metres above sea level. Parking is available.

Facilities

Lifeguard service with certified rescue personnel during summer. Shower facilities, recreational areas including games rooms, restaurants, parking, and cycle path.

Season

Official monitoring occurs year-round. Animals are permitted access except from 15 May to 15 September, when access is restricted to the pedestrian pathway only.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Excellent for the years 2016–2019. Total phosphorus concentration averaged 21 µg/l for the period 2014–2016. Nitrate concentrations are well below vulnerability thresholds. The lake experiences internal phosphorus loading from sediment release during anoxic periods, estimated to represent approximately 28% of total phosphorus loading.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms have occurred in previous years (Aphanocapsa holsatica in May 2016 at 2.13×10⁴ cells/ml and Cyanodictyon sp. in May 2016 at 3.28×10⁴ cells/ml). Potential exists for raw sewage discharge into the area from the Calceranica pumping station in case of malfunction. Risk of untreated effluent overflow into Torrente Mandola stream during intense precipitation due to inadequate wastewater network separation. Future cyanobacteria bloom events are considered possible.
