Tigullio's Rocks is a coarse gravel beach surrounded by rocky coastline located in Chiavari, Liguria. The area is backed by residential settlements, olive groves, and Mediterranean vegetation. A panoramic staircase path leads to the cliff, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace is nearby. The bathing water has been classified as Excellent for the 2021–2024 monitoring period.

Coastal water body categorized as rocky terrain with low stability (CWA3). The bathing area covers 2.918 km.

Location

Chiavari, Province of Genova, Liguria region. The beach is located along the Chiavari–Sestri Levante water body.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2021–2024: Excellent. The Preli wastewater treatment plant discharges via an active outfall approximately 1 km to the east of the sampling point, away from the shore. The Fosso Fosso watercourse meets the western boundary of the bathing area. Increased water flow from torrents during heavy rainfall may transport runoff downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae have been detected; the reference station at Chiavari (CHIA) showed no exceedance of the 30,000 cells/litre limit during 2020–2024, but values of 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in July 2023 and 2024. The Ligurian Sea is characterised by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms.

Risks

Heavy precipitation may increase stream flow and transport wastewater downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae occur at concentrations that can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals when inhaled via aerosol.
