Tårs

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Tårs is a 200-meter-long sandy beach located on the western side of Lolland near Tårs Harbour, overlooking the Langelandsbælt strait. The beach features fine sand without major stones and is bordered by a green area and a stone mole separating it from a leisure boat harbour. The beach is 20–25 meters wide and is classified as having excellent water quality based on routine monitoring for faecal indicator bacteria.

Water

The Langelandsbælt strait, classified as brackish water. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, reaching less than 2 meters approximately 100 meters offshore. Current direction is variable, primarily from the southeast.

Location

Tårs, western side of Lolland near Tårs Harbour. Accessed via Tårsvej, which ends at the leisure boat harbour. Parking and toilet facilities are available at the harbour.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2022: Excellent. Classification is based on routine sampling during the bathing season 2018–2021, testing for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria. The classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and phytoplankton blooms is low but present, particularly during warm periods with nutrient-rich water. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) washup at the waterline. Several wastewater sewer outlets near the beach pose a risk to water quality during heavy rainfall; an overflow monitoring system is in place. Glass shards and litter may occur at the beach. Risk of chemical pollution such as oil spills is very low.
