Tennis Chiavari is a predominantly pebbly beach in the western part of the town of Chiavari, Liguria, delimited by artificial structures arranged parallel and perpendicular to the shore. The beach includes private bathing establishments with services and a free beach area, alongside restaurants and other accommodation facilities. The water body is classified as a coastal water with low stability characteristics.

Coastal water body (Chiavari - Sestri Levante). Area extension: 1.283 km². The water is characterized by poor circulation due to artificial barriers parallel to the coast.

Location

Located in Chiavari, Genova province, Liguria region. The town centre is to the east, with parking available uphill from the beach. Tennis courts are located in the vicinity.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2018-2021: Excellent. Monitoring began in 2020. The area is affected by an urbanized context with a coastal treatment plant (Preli depurator) with an active discharge approximately 200 m northwest of the sampling station and discharging outside the bathing water approximately 1.8 km from the shore.

Risks

Poor water circulation due to artificial coastal barriers. In case of upstream criticalities and heavy precipitation, torrents may transport wastewater downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has occurred in the region; in July 2019 a limit exceedance (30,000 cells/litre) was recorded at the Chiavari reference station, though levels remained below 10,000 cells/litre in 2018, 2020, and 2021. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory problems and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
