Zona Gli Scogli is a predominantly pebbly beach in Chiavari, Liguria, bounded by artificial structures. The bathing area was reduced by more than half from 2020 onwards following the introduction of a new bathing water zone called Tennis Chiavari. The beach is located approximately midway along the coastline facing the town of Chiavari and features coarse-grained sand composition. The surrounding area contains urban settlements and structures related to tourism activities.

Coastal waters of the Chiavari – Sestri Levante body of water, classified as coastal waters with mountainous terrain and low stability.

Location

Chiavari, Genova province, Liguria region. The bathing area extends 1.132 km. Parking, restaurants, shops, recreational zones, hotels, a seaside promenade, and a bicycle path are available in the surrounding area.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent for the four-year period 2016–2019. Enterococcus intestinalis: 90th percentile = 3.4 UFC/100 ml; 95th percentile = 4.3 UFC/100 ml. Escherichia coli: 90th percentile = 13.7 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile = 14.8 MPN/100 ml. The Preli wastewater treatment plant is located approximately 1 km west of the sampling point with a discharge conduit approximately 2 km offshore, outside the bathing water zone.

Risks

During heavy precipitation, increased river flow from Torrente Rupinaro (mouth located outside the bathing water zone) may transport pollutants downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has occurred in the region; exceeded 30,000 cells/litre in July 2017 and 2019 at the Chiavari reference station. Values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre occurred in July and August 2016 and June 2017. Ostreopsis ovata inhalation effects are temporary and reversible, causing upper respiratory tract problems and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
